TOKYO – On Monday, Britain defeated Spain in a penalty shootout to advance to the final four of the women’s Olympic hockey event, joining India, Argentina, and the Netherlands.
Following a close 2-2 tie in regulation, Britain won the game in the shootout by scoring two goals, while Spain missed four times thanks to a great performance by Britain’s experienced goalkeeper Madeleine Hinch.
The Netherlands defeated New Zealand 3-0 in the semi-finals, thanks to goals from Lidewij Welten, Frederique Matla, and Lauren Stam.
India stunned Australia 1-0 in the quarter-finals and will meet Argentina in the semi-finals on Wednesday, after the South Americans advanced for the first time since 2012 with a 3-0 triumph against Germany.
Gurjit Kaur scored India’s game-winning goal from a penalty corner in the first half, beating Australia goalkeeper Rachael Lynch, who had had four straight clean sheets.
