The ‘Suhail’ star was visible in the UAE sky on Tuesday, signalling a shift to cooler weather.
According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, the star was seen 50 minutes before sunrise.
According to him, the appearance of the Suhail star in central Arabia signifies the end of the country’s extreme heat.
Suhail, the second brightest star in the sky after Sirius, is 313 light years away from Earth. It can be observed throughout the Arabian Peninsula until late winter.
Temperatures have been dropping across the country recently. There have also been reports of heavy rainfall and hail in several parts of the UAE.
The Suhail star had been known to the Arabs from ancient times, according to Al Jarwan. It was mentioned frequently in Arab poetry, tales, and Bedouin proverbs.
“This star was used to guide people’s fishing and farming activities in the past. Suhail’s presence also signifies the beginning of the hunting season “Al Jarwan stated.
When a star appears in the night sky, falconers begin to set their nets, as it signals the start of the migratory season for these birds of prey.
The star is also popular in UAE art and literature, where it is frequently depicted as a symbol of love and purity of heart.
According to Al Jarwan, the Suhail star coincides with a drop in sea temperatures, indicating that great amounts of fish will return to the coast.
